PFA’s water-supply requirements generally are contingent on two factors: type of structure and where it’s located.
- All commercial buildings and multi-family (three or more units) residential structures must be within 300 feet of a fire hydrant capable of supplying at least 1,500 gallons of water per minute at a residual pressure of 20 psi. (Residual pressure is the pressure remaining in the water main once a fire hydrant is flowing water.)
- All urban residential structures (single-family or duplex) must be within 400 feet of a fire hydrant capable of supplying at least 1,000 gallons per minute at a residual pressure of 20 psi.
- All rural residential structures (single-family or duplex) must be within 400 feet of a fire hydrant capable of supplying at least 500 gallons per minute at a residual pressure of 20 psi.
If an adequate water supply cannot be provided, the structure must be equipped with an automatic fire-sprinkler system.
