An occupant load sign is required in all “rooms of assembly” not having fixed seats. This may be a church sanctuary, a restaurant or a movie theater. The occupant load sign is required in all rooms in which the occupant load exceeds 49; specific formulas in the Fire Code are used to calculate the occupant load, based on size and use of the room. The sign is required to be posted near the main entry in the room of assembly.
